It Is Not About Cesar Chavez

Even though he became the "face" of the United Farm Workers he isn't the movement.

So let's start celebrating it right.

Let us celebrate all ethnic backgrounds.

Early 1800s: Native Americans

1800–1848: Missions/Ranchos relied almost exclusively on indigenous labor.

There were also a small numbers of Spanish and Russian settlers.

Chinese & the Early Asian Wave

1860s–1882: Chinese Workers. 

They were the first major migrant group to dominate farm labor in California.

After the transcontinental railroad, Chinese workers became the largest farm labor group (roughly 80% by 1886).

1882–1900: Japanese & South Asian Workers

After the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, other Asian groups took over.

In the late 1800s many Japanese laborers moved from Japan and Hawaii to the West Coast.

By the 1900s, Punjabi Sikhs and Filipino workers also arrived and worked the fields of California.


1900–1950: Mexican & Filipino Dominance

1910s–1930s: Mexicans

Mexican workers became the primary laborers in the 1910s (boosted by the revolution in Mexico), while Filipinos were crucial, especially in the 1920s.


1920s–1930s: Filipino Workers

Recruited in large numbers during the 1920s, often arriving via Hawaii, Filipinos became a critical part of the workforce.

1930s: "Dust Bowl" Migrants

During the Great Depression, thousands of White "Okie" and "Arkie" refugees from the Midwest briefly became the majority of the seasonal workforce.

1942–1947: Bracero Program

The first phase of this guest-worker program solidified the reliance on Mexican labor during WWII. 

1950–2000: The Latino Majority

1951–1964: Peak Bracero Era

Millions of Mexican men were brought in on short-term contracts.

1960s–1980s: Filipino & Mexican Activism

The workforce remained multi-ethnic, but predominantly Mexican and Filipino.

The UFW was formed (1966) by the merger of Cesar Chavez’s National Farm Workers Association and the Filipino Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC), led by Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz.

Filipinos were eased out of the UFW and like all the other ethnic groups left work in the farms.

1990s–2000: Over 90% Latino 

Today it is predominantly of Mexican heritage.

History tells us it is not about Cesar Chavez at all. While Cesar Chavez became the face, it was a multi-ethnic, multi-generational movement of totally forgotten Asian and other people groups.

Another Assault on An Elderly Asian

 

No one is saying it but this appears to be another Asian Hate Crime not being reported.

Victim is 74 year old Asian lady.

She is someone's wife, mom, sister, aunt, grandma, friend. 

From New York to San Francisco, assaults on Asian senior citizens are still a sad reality that everyone is sweeping under the rug and no one is concerned about. Yes even the news or especially the news.

So the assault on elderly Asians in cities across the United States is still ongoing.

This recent incident is captured on video and it happened in Chicago's Chinatown. Yes no arrests have been made, so far at least.

And no, not only was the elderly Asian victim assaulted, his car was taken. The victim uses his car to work and now he has no means of livelihood.

So here's another crime against Asians in America, but no, there is no Asian hate crimes in the U.S. No, Asians aren't being targeted. Americans love Asians.

Weird though, many of the victims are always, Asian grandmas and Asian grandpas, and yes Asians, Chinese or Chinese looking.

But if the words, "go back to your own <bleep>ing country" isn't spoken or written (and sometimes even if they are) these aren't hate crimes and no, Asian grandmas and grandpas aren't targets of crimes.

Veiled Racism

Journey

Sometimes racism in America and elsewhere is so veiled, it's hard to see it, but it's in there somewhere. You can feel it.

Not even calling Arnel Pineda (Philippine born and raised Asian lead singer of the band Journey) by his name is certainly bordering on something racial.

And then pointing out that he is forgetting "where" he came from is the dead give away.

It is like saying "go back to the (expletive) country you came from".

The band Journey had a lot of internal squabbles, back in the day and certainly up until today, all bands do. And we're not going into that mess as it will just get the point muddier.

It Wasn't Easy

Plus most people already know that die hard Journey fans adore Steve Perry and love some of the other ex Journey band members. And many of them do not appreciate Arnel taking over as the lead singer of the band they adore. Many just will not accept him.

But like it or not, Arnel is the lead singer of Journey now, and that's since 2007, way back when he was first "discovered" singing Journey songs in Youtube by Neal. 

So yes Arnel has paid his dues. Bringing up where he came is really uncalled for and just showing our true colors.

Land of the Free

Anyway, let's see, let's turn the tables, Michaele is currently the wife of Neal Schon, she was born Michaele Ann Holt -- was an Undergrad, worked in Make Up Counters, worked as a Make Up Artist, a Model, not sure for what, she is known for embellishing her credentials.

She got known for being a high profile Party Crasher, then a (Reality) TV Personality and a Wife of Celebrities.

Yes, so let's all never forget where we came from either. We all came from somewhere. Whatever color we may be. We all bleed dark red when cut, get black and blue when hit and we hurt inside like everyone else.

It's almost a daily occurence now. Asians or Chinese looking people just minding their own business are assaulted and even killed in major cities across America and in broad daylight.

Most people can't tell Asians apart.

And yes most are not considered hate crimes, racially motivated or racism. Unless some witness will testify that they heard the suspect say some racial profanity or the harsh words, go back to your own effing country.

Crazy, maybe the Native Americans should start joining this crazy trend, to send everyone else back to their countries of origin.

NYPD, LAPD, SFPD, FBI, DOJ, DAs, all the different alphabets, politicians what are you doing?

Yellow is a color too.

Asian grandmas, grandpas and Asians of all ages are fearful of walking down the street or waiting on bus stops and subways.

Think about this for a moment, if these attacks are happening to White or Black grandmas, what do you think would have already happened?

Yes, double standard huh.

Are we waiting for Asian vigilate groups to take matters into their own hands?

We already seen what happens when you guys fail to protect Asians, and they have to fend for themselves.

It's just amusing that most of the attacks are on the elderly, at least they still have some smarts to know that many Asians may actually be like Bruce Lee.

Asian Student Bullied and Suspended

 

Texas: Shaan Pritmani, a 14 year old Asian American student, was assaulted by a White student at Coppell Middle School in Texas during lunch break.

Students recorded the incident and shared it on social media. Students were laughing at the Asian student during the entire episode.

The school suspended the assaulted student for three days. The student who assaulted him was suspended for one day.

Obviously, the media do not care. Students do not care. Parents and teachers do not care. The school do not care. The police do not care.  Politicians do not care. The video going viral is doing nothing. I mean why would it when people all over America bully, assault and kill Asian Americans all the time. 

The question really is, what are Asian Americans going to do about this?

Critics Choice Awards Gags

Ken and Joel

So I happen to watch the first minutes of the Critics Choice Awards and regretted it instantly.

I have never watched an awards show in well over a decade and TV for years for that matter. But for some unfortunate reason I happen to catch the start of this one -- the opening spiel of the hosts and then the back and forth between the first presentors, comedians Ken Jeong and Joel McHale.

Those were hard to watch, as awkward, unamusing and unfunny as they come. I then got reminded why I quit watching television.

Why

So why would Ken who is a doctor and already a known comedian stoop that low or still doing be that sort of thing?

Making fun of someone's height and one's indirect reference to Ken's ethnicity as a short Asian man and coming back to it again and again, just in case the audience couldn't or wouldn't understand is just so bad form.

Stereotype

I am reminded at a time when a few decades ago, the only way Asian men can get roles in Hollywood is to act and look like Hollywood's stereotypical Asian -- a short and unattractive guy who speak English badly. Yes, like Pat Morita in the Karate Kid.

Mr. Morita spoke fluent English. He was born snd educated in California and was smart and well spoken. But he couldn't get into Hollywood being who he is.

Mr. Morita is a native English Speaker, born and raised in California

Okay he can, but only if he is short and can act like an immigrant and speaks like Yoda, or someone who just got off a boat.

It's Not A Hate Crime - It's All Good

Christina Yuna Lee's murder is not a hate crime. Asian Americans calm down!

In America, if it's a crime against Asians or East Asian looking people, the narrative is always this is NOT A HATE CRIME.

Not a single one? You tell me.

It's Time

It is about time that all Asian Americans of all Asian countries stand shoulder to shoulder, be united as one and shout ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

How many more of our young and elderly will have to be subjected to such hate and brutality before something is done?

How long shall we live in fear and worry?

All Asians need to unite and open their eyes to the sad reality. No one will help Asians besides Asians themselves.

Police reported that Christina Lee (35 years old) was coming home Saturday night (Feb 12th) and walking up six flights of stairs to her New York apartment when a homeless man named Assamad Nash, 25, followed her into her unit and stabbed her dead more than 40 times. 

Lee is Korean American.

But to all non-East Asians, all Asians are Chinese. Doesn't matter if one is Vietnamese, Lao, Burmese, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Filipino, Malaysian, Tibetan, Sri Lankan, Cambodian, Indonesian, Singaporean or any other Far East Asian, even if they are Pacific Islander, if you look like one or have an Asian sounding accent, you are. 

If you are South Asian, Middle Eastern or some other Asian then you are stereotyped as something else and someone to be hated, assaulted, robbed, raped or whatever else they can think of.

Unfortunately not a hate crime. 

 

Survey Finds that 42% of Americans Cannot Name a Famous Asian American

In the News

So I don't know what the new agenda is now. But this new survey result being peddled by the news media is now sending mixed signals or at least mixing up the Asian hate agenda.

I think the media also reported recently that on another survey, that a third of Americans do not believe that there is a rise in Asian hate crimes. (Ok, a third is 1 out of every 3 people, in case you don't know math). 

Now I think these two surveys together support each other.

And the issue is and always was the lack of knowledge, learning, education or awareness, or to say it bluntly, ignorance, stupidity or idiocity of a lot of people who are living in the United States (regardless of race). 

Many Americans still think Asians mean Chinese or at least Chinese looking.

Most probably they cannot even point where Asia is on the globe.

Facts

1. Asia? It is the biggest continent in the world. If you would look at the world map it is a third (here it is again) of the page. And no, it is not just China. China is a big place with lots of people but Asia is bigger and has more people. 

2. Famous Asian Americans? Granted there are no "famous" Asian Americans, but well-known or widely known there are a ton, those who are always in the news, always on TV, movies, online and in many different fields. The apps that you use and the websites that you click on were mostly founded and run by, you guessed it, Asians.

3. Chinese eyes? I know this is racist but countless non-Asians make that slanting eye gesture when referring to Asians.

4. We need to say this again. Asians are not just Chinese. Asian Americans come from over 50 countries. They are diverse and they aren't just recognizable by their eyes. And yes Covid 19 came from China. But most Asian Americans now, were born in California, New York, Texas, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Washington, Hawaii and major cities across America and almost all of them haven't even been to China yet, and don't intend to.

5. Asian hate? There has been Asian hate in America ever since they first started coming here hundreds of years ago. There has been hate directed towards every kind of Asian and different kinds of Asians in every generation.

6. Rise in hate? Yes there was a slight rise on Asian hate crimes because of Covid 19. But this has been going on up and down, ebbing and flowing for generations.

Invisible

Asians are largely invisible in America but have always been the whipping boys and the safest targets of jokes, crimes and violence. 

Immigrants

Asian Americans are the fastest growing ethnic group in America and expected to be the largest immigrant group in 20 to 30 years.

The largest groups that are here now are the Chinese, the Indians, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Koreans, Japanese, Pakistanis, Cambodians, Hmongs, Thais, Laotians, Bangladeshis, Burmese and Iranians.

Asian Americans or Half Asians?

Of course aside fom the founders and CEOs of big businesses, technology and internet whose names or faces many will not be familiar with. But for sure their companies and services will be, there are a lot more who are well known but only within their circles. It is hard to go to hospitals, universities, technology companies and not see Asian Americans everywhere.

It's just your typical victim now, elderly looking Chinese. Doesn't even have to be Chinese, just Chinese looking and old. Male or female, it doesn't matter. 

Don't Force Asians' and Pacific Islanders' Hands

I've been saying this all along, stop pushing Asians to a corner and wait to see what they are going to do.

If you don't want a push back, stop Asian hate and also quit denying that there is hate. The hate and bullying has been in these United States since the first Asians got here hundreds of years ago. 

Hate

Asians normally do not like other Asians, but if certain Americans continue to push, bully and hurt Asian Americans then watch out.

Many Asians may not fight back physically but they can and will if pushed hard enough.

Asians can come back at you through other ways as well. Don't wait to find out how.

Asian / Pacific Islander Unity

Once all Asian Americans and along with Pacific Islanders come together, it can be a start of something big and will effect real change in America.

Asia is the biggest continent. China and India alone is already 3 out of 8 people in the planet. Add all the other Asians and the people of the Pacific Islands then thats going to be 1 out of every 2 people. 

They make up more than half of the planet.

In America and in most Western countries, when Asians and Pacific Islanders combine forces and decide to flex their muscle, they can close down entire industries, make life miserable for most Americans and even cripple economies.

Entire Industries

Asians work as doctors, engineers, tech support, accountants, dentists, pharmacists, chemists, scientists, teachers, tutors, sales professionals, nurses, caregivers, therapists and other medical professionals.

They own businesses, grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, donut shops and beauty shops. They drive taxi cabs, they deliver the mail, do your taxes, cook and serve your food, they work in the technology sector, in government, in hotels, in childcare, retirement homes and hospices.

Asians and Pacific Islanders are essential to the most important aspects of American daily life.

Stop the hate or risk finding out the hard way what happens when all Asian Americans and Pacific islanders gets fed up.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders come from these countries and territories.

Calling All Grandmas

White grandmas, African American grandmas, Hispanic grandmas... are you just going to be a spectator and be like those grown men inside that building, watching, doing nothing and then even closing the door on the victim who was lying down on the pavement? They let a grown man beat up an Asian grandma, and all she was doing was minding her own business and was on her way to church.

The face of this monster is right there, no doubt that this is a hate crime. This is elder abuse, criminal threats, physical assault, attempted murder and more.

Retaliation

Please do not wait on a race war to happen. These racists have been hating on the Chinese people for awhile now and they have been shooting up and beating up older Koreans, Vietnamese, Japanese, Filipinas and other Chinese looking Asians.

Please do not wait for all Asians to join hands and use their martial arts skills and their rooftop sniping.

Stop trying their patience. Do not wait for Asian Martial Artists to stop teaching martial arts to non-Asians and start using it on them instead. A lot of Asians have martial arts backgrounds, but are not your typical UFC fighter. They do not fight for sport, but they will fight to defend their families and especially their moms and grandmas.

The Hate is Real

Yes the hate on Asians and Asian Americans are real, and has been for over a century. And it has escalated significantly since 9-11 and exponentially since the pandemic.

On the Stop AAPI's website we can see incidents of hate not just towards Asians but also Pacific Islanders -- something most people ignore or do not wish to talk about but clearly can see if they only open their eyes.

Coronavirus

Almost all of the current hate against Asians are obviously due to the C virus.

This pandemic virus, we can obviously point a finger at the World Health Organization and the Chinese Communist Party. 

But definitely not towards Asians and definitely not on the Chinese people who also suffered like the rest of us. People there lost their lives as well and many trying to tell the world about this new virus when the WHO and the CPP were trying to hide it from November 2019 to March 2020.

Coronavirus Has Nothing To Do with Asian Americans

Asian immigrants to America have to endure their share of discrimination since they first arrived here hundreds of years ago. Generations of Asian Americans have been born in America and most have not even been to China.

Ways to Help If You are Witnessing Hate Towards AAPIs

• Take Action: Approach the targeted person, introduce yourself, and offer support.

• Actively Listen: Ask before taking any actions and respect the targeted person’’s wishes. Monitor the situation if needed.

• Ignore Attacker: Using your discretion, attempt to calm the situation by using your voice, body language, or distractions.

• Accompany: If the situation escalates, invite the targeted person to join you in leaving.

• Offer Emotional Support: Help the targeted person by asking how they’re feeling. Assist them in figuring out what they want to do next.

In other words, do not ignore, try to diffuse the situation, prevent  violence, be smart, use common sense, be kind, do the right thing and offer help and assistance.

Funny Little Things Regular Americans Say

Where Are You From?

You will get what this is about after you watch this two minute video:

Yes, "regular" Americans can be pretty annoying, of course without them trying to be and/or without them having a clue.

If I were to guess where these regulars would be from, they probably would be English or German. But without a noticeable accent or clue then most people would say English.

Okay, let us not be color blind, these "Regular Americans" could also be Hispanic or Black.

And we would know them because they would be the ones who would normally blurt out:

Acting Geniunely Surprised

"Whoa, your english is great."

And then proceed to ask:

"Where are you from?"

And then after getting the answer they were looking for, they'd go (depending on the response).

"Wow, I love kimchi, or sushi, or chicken curry, or chicken adobo, or pho or orange chicken" (yes we know this is as American as General Tso and Sriracha Sauce but it takes too long to explain this to regular Americans).

And then they continue on with a conversation and normally will follow it up with something like, "I love Jackie Chan, or Pat Morita, or Salman Khan, or BTS or Arnel Pineda."

Then they would go on sharing their trip to that country or that they have an Asian spouse or in-law or neighbor. And proceed to ask questions they have been waiting for a long time to ask about the country, the culture or it's people. Yup, must be a regular American thing.

The Funny Joe

So we got to know this Asian guy named Joe awhile back*.

It's uncanny this his jokes were political and against Donald Trump.

And it is refreshing because there are no profanity or rude language, fairly typical of comedians born in Asia, that and sometimes you need to think hard before you can get the punchline.

Next year when comedy bars open or even in virtual stand up shows, he should definitely jump into the fray to test if America has changed and opening up opportunities for all. It will be the best time for him to do so.

Although he should quit with Trump and now concentrate with his namesake, the President-elect.

Asian Stereotypes

So it takes an Asian comedian to bring home some crazy realities about Asians in America. 

And even that being said, these realities will just be a punchline, something to laugh about.

Minority

No one takes Asians seriously, except until it's too late like after Pearl Harbor. But again after a generation, who even remembers that? Most Americans cannot even remember the names of their Asian classmates some 10 years ago.

Asians are one of the most ignored minorities, if not the most ignored minority in America, but in reality they are in the majority just by their sheer numbers. But no one is seeing that. Let's not continue to rile them up or ignore them. This might come back to bite us.

Let's not wake up the real sleeping giant. 

Exhausted and Frustrated

The most admired woman in America for 2018 and 2019 stated that "we don't exist, and when we do exist, we exist as a threat. And that is exhausting".

We, meaning African Americans.

She is right on one thing. It is exhausting. And that is true.

So we all know that Black Lives Matter and that All Other Colors Will Not Truly Matter Until They Do.

We get that. Most people do.

Reality

But the reality is that African Americans are no more invisible than American Indians, Native Alaskans, American Samoans, American Pacific Islanders and Asian Americans.

In fact when people talk about the U.S. it is only about the Blacks and the Whites, okay also the Hispanics. Si, ellos hablar espanol. And everyone who don't understand, hates it.

Invisible too are Buddhists and to some extent Jews, as a religion.

No, African Americans are only just as invisible as those listed above. And in most cases they aren't even close to being as invisible.

Visible

Second, and this is a sweeping generalization, but bear with me, in most cases African Americans are the most visible, they are the most passionate, the most colorful, the most animated, the most vocal, they are the loudest and the proudest.

They are the best athletes in the planet. They are the best singers, among the best song writers and musicians. They are the best dancers and artists. I mean they are not invisible or as "invisible" as they think.

In fact in many cases they are the most visible.

Threat

Now she is correct when she said that when they do exist, they are a threat.

Because they are.

Make no mistake in a fight between a police officer and a more athletic African American, the officer will be messed up.

In a basketball or football game in the park, the African Americans will dominate.

In the boxing ring, more money will be on the African American fighter.

In a singing competition, the African American singers are always the ones to beat.

Invisible

The real invisible people are the Asians, the Pacific Islanders, the Native Americans and the Buddhists.

The Yellows and the Reds and some of the Browns. No one talks about them. No one cares about them. No one comes to their aid when they are bullied or need help.

During riots, Asian stores get looted, no one cares.

During the height of the pandemic, Asians were bashed and assaulted, no one believes that narrative.

Asians, working mostly as nurses, doctors, caregivers and frontliners are dying due to the corona virus, no one bats an eyelash.

Don't Complain

And we hardly hear them speak up, we hardly hear them complain, we hardly hear them do anything at all. They just work and work and work. Yes, sometimes to the point of death, above and beyond.

But all colors mock them and look down on them. They are at the bottom of the color spectrum.

They are invisible, no one sees them unless to make fun of them or tell them to go back where they came from, and everyone is okay with it.

And no, there is no chance in hell that one of them will make it to the ballot as President of these "United" States.

Now that is both frustrating and exhausting. But no one's complaining. Who cares anyway?
